Chapter Twenty-one

Next morning they ate breakfast late, so late that it was almost lunchtime. That had partly been as a consequence of their tiredness, plus their reluctance to leave the room where their despair and sadness had turned to jubilant happiness. Even breakfast was a novel experience, as they ate it with Niki perched on Gavriil’s knee, her arm around his neck as they whispered a conversation that had little to do with what they were eating.

When Niki took the dishes to the sink, Gavriil looked round at the home he knew they would share. ‘I like what you’ve done to the furniture. The room looks so much better like this.’

Niki smiled. ‘Thank you, I’m glad you like it. Of course, you do realize that all this is yours now, don’t you – and the land.’

‘What are you talking about?’ Gavriil took her in his arms. ‘This has always been our home.’

‘It may have been where we lived, but I have no rights to any of it. Although it holds so many memories for me, it’s all yours, my darling.’

‘No, you have every right to be here, to share this with me, and there is one solution.’

Niki looked puzzled.

Gavriil walked across the room and took her in his arms. ‘Marry me.’

‘You think we should be married? Nothing would make me happier, Gav, but before we can even consider that there is one huge snag to overcome. There was one enormous drawback to finding those certificates.’

‘What snag is that? Surely, all we need to do is take that scientific evidence to Papa Mikhailis, and that should clear everything up.’

‘It will do as far as you and I being lovers, but there is a legal requirement to be observed in the wedding ceremony as I recall. What name can we put on the marriage certificate? I’m no longer entitled to call myself Galanis, and unless I can get proof of my real parentage I don’t actually have a surname. Not only is my birth certificate false, but there is no baptism certificate for me as there is for you.’

‘Damn! I never thought of that. Hang on though, what about those tests? The ones your flatmate is performing? Won’t they show who you’re related to?’

‘They will if my theory’s correct, but that’s only half the battle, Gav. Even if I’m right, getting either the Carras or Anthis family to admit the truth won’t be easy. Think of all the trouble that was taken back then, all designed to keep whatever happened secret. There’s no guarantee they’ll have a change of heart after such a long time. All we have is the photo of George and Mata that was cut in two and a lot of village rumour and gossip that may have nothing to do with any of this. There’s also a strong possibility that those DNA results will show that I’m not related to either family, so I’m afraid we’ll have to be patient. And if we can’t get married, we’ll simply have to live in sin.
